Towns and Villages

Shropshire and the near beyond, is a veritable treasure trove of beautiful, quaint and historic towns and villages. Here we give a flavour of just a few of them.

Bridgnorth

Often referred to as "The Jewel of The Severn" Bridgnorth occupies one of the most spectacular inland town settings in England. In 1642 King Charles I described the view from Castle Walk as "the finest in my domain".

The Town is split over two levels: The lower part, known as "Low Town" straddles the River Severn, whilst the upper portion, "High Town", is perched dramatically on top of one hundred foot sandstone cliffs. The two are linked by a series of historic winding steps and a unique cliff railway.

One of the major attractions of the Town is the Servern Valley railway.

Ironbridge

Since the building of the iron bridge (in 1779) the area has been attracting visitors from all over the world. In November 1986 UNESCO designated the Ironbridge Gorge a World Heritage Site, for both its natural and cultural features, confirming the exceptional nature of this area. Ironbridge has nine award winning museums and sites.

Much Wenlock

The beautiful "black & white" town of Much Wenlock is the centre of a unique district offering much to explore in the historic town and the surrounding countryside.

People may be surprised to learn that the modern Olympic Games originated in the town.

The town's museum contains numerous artifacts relating to Dr Brookes and you can follow the Olympian Trail which will take you past some of the sites associated with the Games.

On the outskirts of the town you can visit the dramatic ruins of Wenlock Priory. The nearby limestone escarpment of Wenlock Edge is a haven for walkers and fossil hunters.

Ludlow

The historic Shropshire town of Ludlow has much to offer:

The Castle, fine period houses, lanes with numerous antique and book shops, the largest church in Shropshire; pottery and craft shops.

Whitcliffe Common is only a short walk away and provides panoramic views of Ludlow, the Clee Hills and Wenlock Edge, with walks along the river and through the woods.

Ludlow enjoys a wealth of really excellent eating places including several Michelin starred restaurants.
